  1. hehe Thanks a lot Des :)

it only took me 5 years to level him to 80 ;)

with a long long long break when he was simply a bank alt and never left Og !!

still getting used to him...and only using his frist spec. i really need to try arcane.

not sure who i prefer yet although i still really enjoy oomkin.

  2. had a quick look at your husbands mage and yeah his gear is nice without being mega so its the sorta stuff i can aim for equivalent of from badges etc.

atm i'm going to be hitting Lord Ahune a lot for the cloak he drops (K has it on his first run!)

i've also got a battered hilt which i'm not sure if to use for the mage or K ? I cant find any details of a caster 2h staff that K would use from the quest chain at lvl 251? only seen swords and a 1h mace.....

also a quick question to your husband - which of the arcane specs he has would be most suitable/used in 5 mans only ?

  3. It's funny that you mentioned the battered hilt! I won that drop Monday evening and it's been sitting with my druid since then. My druid currently has a staff from ICC-10 (I believe) for her resto set, so the weapon from the hilt would be a side grade for her, as she doesn't have a decent off-hand. The only use she would have for it is with her tanking set, and I only use that to farm or tank the occasional heroic these days. I think I'll wait for an off-spec gift from the loot gods during one of our raids instead.

I had thought about giving the hilt to my DK or my warlock, but since they're only alts, I doubt I'll be raiding very steadily with them and it seems like a waste.

I thought about selling it - it still fetches a pretty penny on my realm's Auction House or trade...

And then I talked to my husband, whose warlock is level 80 and in need of a better weapon for Arena. I think I'm going to donate the hilt to him for his adventures in Arena. I don't have much trouble farming gold and as I mentioned- my alts rarely see the inside of raids - so it makes more sense to give it to my husband who will actually benefit a great deal from it.

To answer your question: One of his specs is for PvP, the other is for raids/heroics. The one he uses in raids I think is the 71/0/0 Full Arcane, but I've seen him use both in raids and get decent dps out of both.

Here's a link to another mage that was in our guild who's dps is really solid:

    Desi’s Mage

He used to out-dps mages that were better geared than he was. He seems to use his frost spec for farming/solo questing and arcane to rock dps meters in dungeons and raids.

Another site that I LOVE for trying to decide on a build for my toons is: Wow Popular/Talent Chic

It lists the most popular builds out there - which "generally" means they're the best performing specs. You just pick what you want from the check boxes on the left hand side. The raid specs are really 5 man friendly too, so that's what I use when I'm trying to figure out what direction to go in. I love the site and it has worked well for my warlock and death knight both - improving their dps quite a bit.

I think any raid spec would be good for 5 mans, and then, should you decide to raid - you'll be ready to go. I hope that helps :)

  5. oh and the Hilt on our AH goes for 10k.

i bought one from a friend for 6k.

  6. Unfortunately, there's not a staff rewarded from the Battered Hilt quest chain.

I don't believe mages can use maces, so I think the best reward for you would be:
    Quel'Delar, Lens of the Mind.

That quest reward will leave you looking for an Off-hand weapon, but they're not too terribly hard to come by. There are some decent picks from the emblem vendors, or if you're in the mood for something a little better, you can always try to get Shriveled Heart from Heroic Halls of Reflection. You'll have to make it all the way to the end because it comes from the chest after the "Escape From The Lich King" event.

If you can get into an Onyxia 25 - there is the Antediluvian Cornerstone Grimoire that she has a chance to drop. She drops a similar item on 10 man, the Antique Cornerstone Grimoire. The Onyxia raids are actually fairly easy if you get in with an experienced group and avoid her breaths and the whelps.

If you find some extra time and can pug into a Trial of the Crusader, there are some really, really nice offhands that drop there too. My husband's mage just recently got the Alliance version of Talisman of Heedless Sins. (The Alliance Version is called the "Symbol of Transgression", but has the exact same stats).

So, those are some options if you're going to complete the Battered Hilt quests. Not only that, but you'll get an achievement for having completed it. :)

  7. thanks Des.

    no staff /cry

that sucks. how can there not be a staff for 2h staff classes. that really does suck.

K has the OH from the LK but my mage does not having only been there once so far !

Hmm if i could the staff from Ahune for both of them maybe i'd not bother with the Hilt quest.....

Am never likely to get to Ony or Toc raids tbh.

  8. I partially agree with the sadness about the staff but I think the decision was based more on what makes sense with the Lore of the weapon itself...

That being said, I think the only reason maces were included at all was to make it so that every class could complete the quest and earn a reward - you know, so no one was left out.

GEEK ALERT!: Quel'Delar is the sister blade of Quel'Serrar - a set of swords forged to protect Azerothians from attack. I'll leave it at that for now and maybe I'll write up a post on the history of the sister blades. I LOVE lore and Blizzard does an amazing job with it...for the most part.

I imagine that developers felt that a staff or polearm would be too much of a stretch from the lore to sneak it by Lore nerds and as long as everyone was able to obtain the weapon- I don't know that they cared much for whether or not it was the best choice for us. Sad...but probably true.

  9. The only thing that makes me a LITTLE sad about giving up my battered hilt is that I won't be able to experience the questline and the story behind the sword...

But I would guess that once we all hit level 85, the trash in those ICC heroics will be soloable and I'll just complete the quests at that time...assuming Blizzard doesn't remove them on me.

I'd probably hate them infinitely for that. (See that, Blizz? You've been warned...lol!)

  10. Hello, Kheldar. This is a mage-inclined friend of Des.

Now, I'm going to give it to you straight: Quel'Delar will last until the Lich King encounter in ICC. That's right, Quel'Delar is on par with ICC loot, at ilvl 251. Ahune's scythe, on the other hand, is ilvl 232. Quel'Delar is, all-in-all, far better than ANYTHING you currently have access to. Not to mention that is looks absolutely badass d(~.^)z

  11. Right on! My husband finally completed the Battered Hilt questline for his own "Quel'Delar" for his warlock. The weapon itself LOOKS amazing and the stats are downright beautiful!

I know...I'm the best wife ever for giving him the hilt, right?

On a side note, all this talk about Quel'Delar made me want to post something about the lore behind this weapon. (It has spoilers for the questline though, so if you're big into surprises for quest chains - you might not want to read the post on Quel'Delar lol)

  12. Cheers Arador.....so i guess it has to be paired with the OH from the LK in 5 Man Halls of Reflection.

I'm guessing i need to start the questline asap !

however i still cant decide if I should do it on my beloved Druid or the new 80 mage.....
